The Anunnaki The Chronicles of the Guardians Book 1 eBook Martin I Henry Reviews
it was nice he strung the ideas that have been out there for a long time, but gawd he was hard to read. way too much detail on elements that weren't necessary and way too many adjectives. but the one thing that really got me was his writing treatment of the doctoral candidate he mentored. obviously a candidate in her chosen field has to have smarts. and she did at the beginning. but by the time the adventure starts he turns her into a simpering airhead. i skipped a lot of pages.
First of all, like so many other reviewers, the title of the book caught my eye as I too am a fan of the Ancient Astronaut theory. The premise of the book sounded very interesting and I thought that this is right up my alley.
The book started out fantastic with a (I must say, an unrealistic) battle scene in the Afghan desert between local militants and a Russian helicopter that was providing protection to a group of archaeologists at a dig. Like something out of an Indiana Jones movie, the main character jumps in and saves the day.
Then the story jumps to "a few years later" when the main character is a history professor at a university - once again one gets the feeling of watching an Indiana Jones movie. And this is where the story kinds of tapers off and becomes a bit boring. Enters the first antagonist David Letheridge, a completely annoying and unrealistic character to which the main protagonists reacts very poorly - the fact that he didn't stand up for himself gave me a kind of dislike for the main character. Then enters another character - a love interest. The author tries to introduce a corny kind of romance into the story that is an epic fail. Two thirty-somethings that behave like teenagers, really?! The book could really have done without this.
From this point on the author also makes the mistake of turning a smart, independent woman into a heap of mush that seems barely able to stand on her own two feet without Mr. Wonder Man beside her to keep her spine upright. I truly hate weak female characters, especially if she grovels at a man's feet or can't survive without one. Yes, I suppose "airhead" is a good a description for this as any.
Then the main character and his brother takes a vacation in the Australian Outback which turns into the discovery of a life time - one that could change the world and cause a lot of controversy. Unfortunately, the author spend too much time on describing the discovery at the base and one truly become a bit bored - it takes up half the book at least. It is also quite annoying that the main character seems to know everything; kind of like Dan Brown's Robert Langdon character who seem to have an infinite knowledge of ancient history and languages, but not as expertly crafted.
The trip to Egypt turns into a flight for survival, fleeing from the Islamic Brotherhood and the Roman Catholic Church. Once again the main character puts on his James Bond boots to get them out of trouble with the help of the Russian government and rogue CIA agents who come to their aide. A bit unrealistic, but certainly interesting.
Now this is where you think things are going to heat up before the explosive end, but sadly, it was not to be. The book ends so bluntly that I felt completely disappointed. And with no sequel in sight, I will never know what truly happened. In my opinion there is only one author that can leave a book "unfinished", because he's such a master at "leaving it to the reader to decide how it ended" - Stephen King. This author, however, shouldn't have attempted this and should rather have finished the book. Or wrote a sequel...
The author keep repeating the same words over and over again, such as "sorry", "obediently", apologetically". Another annoying thing is that the text flows too much, there are no breaks to indicate direct speech and one often feel lost, not knowing who is speaking. There are also a great many spelling errors. The writer's style make for quite difficult reading, having to go back to previous pages to try and remember what actually happened. Another thing I didn't like, was the use of unfamiliar words; English is only my second language, so I had to use the dictionary function on my reader too often. Doesn't make for smooth reading either. The WORST thing about this book is, however, that it is unfinished and there is no sequel. Very disappointing.
The title of the book (as it is, unfinished) also has very little bearing on the Annunaki - it's more about the race of giant feline Guardians that act as mercenaries for the Annunaki. Therefore the title is misleading, unless the author can supply a sequel that explains the greater involvement of this race in the context of the story.
In a nutshell very interesting topic, but made unpleasant because of difficult reading (unnecessary details, repetition of words, spelling errors, flowing text and unfamiliar words), a very annoying romance, unrealistic characters that are able to accomplish the near impossible and the book has no sufficient ending or a sequel.
Not recommended for religious people, unless you are very open-minded and not touchy.
I agree with the other negative reviews.
The author must not think much of his readers.
Yes, the story is drawn out and boring.
The actions of the characters are not that of supposedly intelligent people.
The main characters are poorly drawn.
The plot is tediously predictable.
Even a child knows not to leave world-shaking information laying about; stupid assumptions abound.
I did not get through it all. I gave up midway when the "secret" was blabed to many, many people and, therefore, easily compromised.
If you like challenging reads filled with smart, action drama or an "Indiana Jones" type adventure, then, this book is not for you.
Disappointed with it isn't even close.
